She Was Her Paradise

Coffee shop daydreams, sunshine pouring through the window of her dark bedroom, mourning in the morning, meditating in the afternoon. Divine escape in the wilderness. Drenched in the perfect loveliness of her skin, hair, and rapture. Her eyes show signs of a past that she chooses to forget, a family that never understood, and a persona she no longer pretends.

She is in love with a girl, a woman, a masterpiece, a force of nature.

They go to the seaside, with a bag full of old poets and slightly warm watermelon slices. They walk amongst the waves and forget about the worries of mundane life. Their soft hands, carefully painted different shades of crimson, intertwine like a beautiful symphony. One gently kisses the other and their love becomes a dance, both synchronized and spontaneous.

The taller one takes out her ukulele, she plays their song as she hums the words that describe their emotions, their almost immortal connection. The one with curly hair sits on the other’s lap, legs stretched outside the hammock that they call home. It’s not the woven seat that is their home, it is simply their embrace that gives them comfort and sweet relief, no matter where they choose to go.

Their parents don’t have a clue, except for the night they stole mamma’s car to drive to Rehoboth. They smile like children as they do something wild on their last night before college. The world is trying to tear them apart and the future is scary, but they have tonight, this one moment to be absolutely free.

They make it to the shore just before sunrise. Along the way, they whisper their summer romance like storytellers, not forgetting a single detail from the day they met at the local bookstore to their Bonnie and Clyde like ending. The light reflects on the ocean horizon and it hits their tear stained faces. They hold each other’s hands like they have before, but this time their touch makes a firework. They press their hands on each other’s chest - feeling the familiar heartbeat. The taller musician twirls her lover’s curly hair just before she kisses her with all the passion in her body. They fall asleep in each other arms till the day becomes too bright. In the end, she was her paradise.
